In short:

  1. Picking natural products for the flu starts with picking a symptom: throat, blocked nose or seasonal tiredness. Propolia and Ladrôme address the throat with propolis, Pranarôm and Puressentiel address breathing with essential oils, Arkopharma covers winter with echinacea.
  2. Pranarôm combines five organic essences in one capsule, 1 to 3 a day from age 12, which is 0.36 to 1.09 euros a day. Its winter range goes down to age 6 with a drop solution.
  3. A day at the adult dose costs between 0.63 euro (Ladrôme tablets) and 1.29 euros (Propolia throat spray), with 0.99 euro at Puressentiel and 1.17 euros at Arkopharma.
  4. None of these formulas treats the flu. Rest, water and watching the fever remain the basis, and a doctor is needed after 65, during pregnancy or above 40 °C.

Before buying: what these products support, and what they leave to the doctor

Flu announces itself suddenly. Within a few hours the temperature climbs, muscles ache and fatigue sends you to bed, while a cold takes several days to settle in.

In that situation, the French health insurance stresses three steps: drink often while the fever lasts, wear light clothing and rest. A mask protects others as soon as you are not alone in the room.

Supplements, essential oils and bee products come afterwards. They do not shorten a flu, they make the throat, the nose or the recovery days more comfortable.

Prevention relies on the vaccination offered every autumn to people aged 65 and over and to vulnerable people. No bottle on the shelf replaces it.

Essential oils, propolis or echinacea: one family per symptom

A scratchy throat: propolis and honey

Propolis is a resin that bees collect from buds and bark to seal the hive. As a spray or a gummy, it settles where the throat feels irritated.

Propolia, a family company based near Lake Salagou in the Hérault, has made it its raw material since 1979. Its organic spray with honey and thyme comes in a 20 ml glass bottle, with a limit of 15 sprays a day.

Ladrôme offers the same resource in a gentler form for the season: an organic syrup with 40% honey, enriched with nine plants including echinacea, pine and thyme, sold at 8.93 euros for 150 ml and reserved for over-12s.

A stuffy nose and breathing: cineole essences

Ravintsara and eucalyptus radiata share a molecule, 1,8-cineole, associated with the feeling of air flowing more freely. They are the two most common oils in the winter formulas of Pranarôm and Puressentiel.

When the nose is really blocked, the oral route is not always enough. The comparison on which natural nasal spray to choose details saline solutions enriched with essential oils.

Seasonal tiredness: echinacea and vitamin C

Purple echinacea, native to the North American prairies, is taken as a course during the cold months. Arkopharma supplies it as organic root powder, Ladrôme as a liquid extract (9.65 euros for 50 ml) or combined with propolis.

Vitamin C is the only active on this shelf whose immunity claim is authorised by Regulation (EU) No 432/2012. To find it on the plate rather than in a tablet, the guide to the best natural antioxidant lists the fruits that provide the most.

Pranarôm, a winter range designed by age and format

Founded in Belgium in 1991, Pranarôm works with chemotyped essential oils, whose biochemical composition is precisely defined. The laboratory covers winter with nearly 60 products, from pure oils to room sprays.

The capsule, for busy adults

The flagship organic capsule combines five essences: eucalyptus radiata, lemon, ginger, clove and winter savory. One to three a day with meals, fourteen days at most, from age 12.

Its strength is flexibility. At one capsule a day, the box of 30 lasts a month for 10.90 euros. At three, it lasts ten days.

Drops and pearls, to adjust the dose

For children over 6, the brand makes an organic aromatic solution to place on a sugar cube or a spoonful of honey, at 10.30 euros for 30 ml. It also comes in a 5 ml bottle, handy for a bag.

Fans of pure ravintsara can choose between the 10 ml bottle (11.20 euros), the large 30 ml format (20.90 euros) and 60 organic pre-dosed pearls (11.50 euros). Its composition is dominated by sabinene, 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpineol.

At home, an organic room spray with sweet orange and ravintsara, at 8.19 euros, scents and freshens the air in living spaces during the cold season.

The four other brands at a glance

Puressentiel, a Brussels laboratory, designed 6 by 9 mm mini-capsules that each hold the equivalent of one drop of organic ravintsara. The brand also sells the pure oil in 10 ml at 10.50 euros and an air spray with 41 essential oils, whose 75 ml bottle delivers 125 sprays.

Arkopharma turns the plant into powder by cold grinding to keep all its constituents. Besides echinacea, its organic range includes propolis capsules, at 13.60 euros for 40.

Ladrôme makes in France, in its own laboratory, an organic winter range built around brown and green propolis: tablets, syrups, gummies, sprays and an inhaler.

Propolia controls the whole chain, from propolis extraction to packaging, in Occitanie. Its organic honey and eucalyptus radiata gummies are sucked at 5 to 6 a day for adults, 3 for children from age 6.

Honey and cough: a review of studies that sheds light on the shelf

Honey is part of the Propolia and Ladrôme formulas, and it is one of the few ingredients on the shelf backed by a solid synthesis of trials. It covers acute cough in children aged 1 to 18.

“Honey probably reduces cough duration better than placebo.” Oduwole et al., Cochrane systematic review on honey for acute cough in children, 6 trials and 899 children, 2018

The benefit is concentrated in the first three days. Beyond that, the authors find no clear advantage on cough severity or on sleep. Before age one, honey remains ruled out.

A sick child sleeps badly, and a child who sleeps badly cries more: parents wondering why a child cries all the time in winter often find part of the answer there.

A season’s calendar: when to start, when to stop

ProductMaximum duration statedWhat a box or bottle covers at adult dose
Pranarôm aromatic capsules14 days10 to 30 days depending on the number of intakes
Puressentiel ravintsara mini-capsules15 consecutive days15 days at 4 capsules
Arkopharma echinacea capsules6 capsules a day, from age 127.5 days at the 6-capsule dose
Ladrôme propolis and acerola tablets20-day programme20 days at 2 tablets
Propolia throat spray15 sprays a dayAbout ten days at the maximum dose

Oral essential oils are taken in short courses with breaks in between. Propolis or echinacea supplements are rather planned as a programme of a few weeks in the depths of winter.

A detail many forget: two aromatic products taken on the same day add up their essential oils. It is better to pick just one per period.

Three questions to ask at the shelf

The first is about format. A capsule or tablet fits into a morning routine, a spray comes out at the office when the throat tickles, a drop on a sugar cube suits those who like to dose for themselves.

The second concerns the person who will take it. A 13-year-old, a 7-year-old and a 70-year-old will not have access to the same products: the minimum age ranges from 6 to 12 depending on the leaflet, and some formulas require a different dose for each age group.

The third is about the budget over time. A cheap bottle that lasts only a week can end up costing more than a 12-euro box designed for twenty days. Dividing the price by the number of days of use, as in the table at the top, avoids unpleasant surprises in February.

Situations where you should not choose alone

Pregnancy and breastfeeding rule out every formula in this comparison. A history of seizures or epilepsy excludes oral essential oils, according to the Pranarôm and Puressentiel leaflets.

An allergy to bee products rules out propolis and honey. An allergy to the daisy family, which includes chamomile and arnica, rules out echinacea.

On the symptom side, the French health insurance page lists the warning signs: difficulty breathing at rest, a fever that returns after improvement, a fever above 40 °C. In these cases, and for an infant, calling the doctor comes before any product, natural or not.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.

Frequently asked questions

Which natural products brand should you pick for the flu?

It depends on the symptom that bothers you most. For breathing, Pranarôm brings together eucalyptus radiata, lemon, ginger, clove and winter savory in one organic capsule, 1 to 3 a day from age 12, and Puressentiel doses organic ravintsara at one drop per capsule, from age 7. For the throat, Propolia and Ladrôme work with propolis and honey, as sprays, syrups, gummies or tablets. To get through the season, Arkopharma relies on organic echinacea root (1,620 mg a day) and Ladrôme on a propolis and acerola formula covering 100% of vitamin C needs. These products support winter comfort without treating the flu, which calls for rest, fluids and sometimes a doctor.

Propolis or echinacea: which one for winter?

Propolis targets the throat first: it comes as sprays, gummies and syrups, at Propolia as at Ladrôme. Echinacea is rather taken as a course, in capsules or as a liquid extract, to support the body through the cold season. Both are combined in Ladrôme's chewable tablets (500 mg of propolis and 125 mg of echinacea a day). They should be avoided, respectively, with an allergy to bee products and to plants of the daisy family.

How much does a day of natural products cost in winter?

At October 2026 retail prices and the maximum adult dose, a day costs about 0.63 euro with Ladrôme's propolis and acerola tablets, 0.99 euro with Puressentiel's ravintsara capsules, 1.09 euros with Pranarôm's aromatic capsules, 1.17 euros with Arkopharma's echinacea capsules and 1.29 euros with Propolia's throat spray. At a lower dose, Pranarôm's capsules drop to 0.36 euro a day.

Does honey help with a flu cough?

In children over one year old, the 2018 Cochrane review of 6 trials and 899 children concludes that honey probably reduces cough frequency better than no treatment or a placebo, with the benefit mostly in the first three days. Honey does not treat the flu itself. It is not recommended before the age of one.

From what age can a child take a natural product?

Propolia's propolis gummies start at 6, at 3 a day. Pranarôm's aromatic drop solution is used after 6 and Puressentiel's ravintsara capsules from 7. Ladrôme's propolis and honey syrup, Arkopharma's capsules and Pranarôm's capsules wait until 12. Before 6, or as soon as a child has a fever, the doctor decides.
